When a Mother Forgives: The Power of Unconditional Love

There is a legend about the holy man, yogi and sage Shankaracharya, who in his youth was an adherent of the philosophy: “Everything is illusion (maya)” and therefore did not recognize the Divine Mother – Shakti. But once while traveling through the Himalayas, he fell seriously ill and fell into unconsciousness. At that moment, a young girl appeared to him who woke him up and healed him – and who then transformed into the Goddess herself. Mother of God or Bhavani – The Mother of the Universe. He was deeply moved, and then from the heart he wrote the famous prayer to her – “To the Divine Mother – a prayer for forgiveness"and later created many verses and songs, the most beautiful of which he always dedicated to the feminine aspect of the Divine."
Prayer to the Divine Mother for forgiveness
Verses from Devyapadakshamapanastotram
Author: Adi Shankaracharya (Adi Shankaracharya)
These are five out of a total of eight verses from "Prayer for Forgiveness from the Divine Mother", written by Adi Shankaracharya – one of the greatest yogis and spiritual teachers of India, founder of Advaita Vedanta (non-duality).
Translation of the lyrics into Macedonian:
1.
I do not know how to recite Your mantra, nor how to use a yantra,
I do not know how to call upon You, nor how to meditate on You.
I don't know how to pray to You, nor how to express my pain.
But this I know, O Mother:
That if I turn to You – all my pain will disappear.
2.
Because of my ignorance, poverty and laziness,
I could not worship Your feet.
But, O Mother, savior of all,
This should all be forgiven.
For a bad son may sometimes be born,
But a bad mother – never.
3.
Oh Mother! You have many worthy sons on earth,
And I am worthless.
But it's not right for you to reject me.
Because a bad son can be born sometimes,
But a bad mother – never.
4.
O Mother of the world,
I did not worship Your feet,
Nor have I given you gifts.
However, Your love for me is beyond compare.
Because a bad son can be born sometimes,
But a bad mother – never.
5.
I have no desire for liberation,
Nor for wealth or knowledge.
Oh, Moon Face, I don't even wish you luck.
But I ask you just one thing:
May my life pass in singing these words:
Mridaani, Rudraani, Shivaa, Shivaa, Bhavani *.
- These are the various names of the Divine Mother in Sanskrit, for example Mrdani means the one who has Compassion, Rudrani – Fearless, Shivaa – Pure, Liberated, Spiritually Uplifted, Bhavani – Mother of the Universe
Why forgiveness is important:
Forgiveness is a profound spiritual act of returning to love and true connection with life. Through this prayer, Shankaracharya not only asks for forgiveness, but also shows awareness of human limitations and God's unconditional loveForgiveness is important because:
-
It frees us from guilt, pride and pain. – admitting one's mistakes opens the way to healing.
-
It softens the heart. – we learn to be calm and connected to something bigger than ourselves.
-
It's not a sign of weakness, but of courage. – it takes strength to accept imperfection and still love.
-
Restores relationship with self, others, and the divine – as this text shows, even when we are not “worthy,” the Mother’s love embraces us.
🌸 Forgiveness Meditation: Connecting with the Divine Mother
Practice this meditation when you are alone and need to connect with yourself.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath... and exhale slowly.
Feel your heart, your body… allow yourself to be here, now.
Call upon the Divine Mother with tenderness:
Silently or to yourself say:
"O Mother, you who are love and mercy, accept me with all my weaknesses."
Imagine a light in your heart.
Let the light be a color that calms you – perhaps gold, pink, or white.
That light grows… and envelops your entire body. That is the love of the Divine Mother.
Repeat to yourself (affirmations):
I let go of the pain I carry with me.
I open my soul to forgiveness.
I forgive myself, I forgive others.
I am loved and accepted exactly as I am.
My heart breathes in peace again.
Oh Mridani, Rudraani, Shiva, Bhavani – guide me with your love.
Stay in silence for a few more breaths…
Feel the lightness, the warmth, the relief...
When you are ready – slowly open your eyes.
I hope you enjoyed this text and the meditation that you can practice regularly whenever you need it.
Forgive – and you will be forgiven!
