From Destiny to Choice – The Courage to Live Our Own Life

In my work with people, I constantly encounter the question: What is it that we are given, and what is it that we can create ourselves?
In family constellations we often say: Our parents are our destiny, and our courage is our choice and freedom.
We are born into a particular family, with a mother and father who are exactly who they should be for us. We are born into a particular body – male or female, sometimes with challenges related to health or identity. We are born into a culture with its own laws, religion, moral norms and rules of conduct.
All of that is ours. fate, or the inheritance we carry with us. And it is in that inheritance that both limitations and opportunities are often hidden. If we fight against what we are given, we remain trapped in resistance. If we accept it, we can transform it.
Courage as a key
To be able to face what has been, courage is needed. Without courage, love, forgiveness, tolerance, and kindness are only temporary states. Courage is the foundation that gives them stability.
But courage does not exist without fear. The fear of judgment, of shame, of being left exposed and vulnerable. The fear that if we show the light within ourselves, it may be extinguished.
If we don't face that fear, we remain trapped in our destiny, carrying it like a heavy burden that drags us down. But we also know that from burdens – from stones – some people know how to build houses and churches.
Acceptance as medicine
Very often people say to me: “This shouldn’t have happened to me.” But the truth is, it did. We don’t have the power to change the past. The only thing we can do is accept that it happened – with all the sense of injustice and pain that brings.
Acceptance does not mean justification. It means accepting our fate and the blow it has dealt us. When we peacefully bow before what is, the pain begins to melt away.
If we reject fate, we reject a part of ourselves. And when we cannot accept ourselves, we will constantly be missing something and it will always seem like it is not enough.
But when we accept fate, then the space for freedom opens up - our true choice.
My personal experience
In over 25 years of working with people through yoga, family constellations, and holistic practices, I have seen how acceptance changes lives. People who have the courage to bow to their fate, no matter how difficult, begin to breathe easier, create different relationships, and feel freer.
I have gone through processes of forgiveness and acceptance myself. I know how challenging it is to look at the past without resistance. But I also know that that is where freedom lies.
